Chandler, I had many of the same concerns. I am moving to Philadelphia and just spent the last 3 days visiting apartments and exploring the areas.
I think you will be safe as long as you take precautions. I think most places, if not all, are pretty safe during the day. During the night, it is best to avoid certain areas (the ones that people have mentioned here).
Learn how to carry your belongings safely.
And how to run quickly

The only dangerous part in center city is chinatown at night.

What an absolute load of sh*t. You must not be aware of the houses selling for $400,000 in Spruce Hill, Cedar Park, and Powelton Village.

We are not flat out lying. When is the last time tourists were attacked?

Telling tourists not to come to visit center city when probabl 99% of our violent crime is in the same few neighborhoods is not right. Every city has the same issues. Whens the last time a tourist was attacked in this city?

Besides, based on this thread, I assume he is from Pittsburgh and is just bitter about something

"I've never had a problem and I've been to dangerous areas," like that's more relevent than all the victims who have run into problems.

And I never told anyone not to come to Center City, so don't put words in my mouth. I specifically said "Philly is a great town w/ a bad element - even the good areas can be dangerous." When you flat out lie about what I say, it means you can't find enough wrong w/ what I really said, so you have to try to make it worse.

How am I supposed to know that? Muggings aren't news b/c they happen so often. Case in point - the waitress and bartender I work with. LOL since when have muggings been reported by the news or in the paper? C'mon, buddy.

Post some statistics, dude, then maybe we'll take you seriously. Until then, most people will find your claims utterly ridiculous.

I saved you guys the trouble, thanks.

you could have made it even simpler:

it's not

philly is dangerous ?

it's

philly is dangerous !!!!!!

I'm not sure that's true, but no one seems much interested in definitions (and no one's yet mentioned the ever-present danger of being run over crossing the street)

Believe me when I say there's only one person I need to take me seriously - the fellow from China who is being told muggings and violent crimes don't take place in Center City, and that thugs will leave you alone if you leave them alone.

I've said what I have to say. He can believe me- who doesn't care what people think of Philly, or he can believe you guys- who are so obsessed w/ Philly's reputation that you're willing to lie about the frequency of violent crime.

Happy bullshitting.
