A little off topic, but...
My fionce and I just moved into Philly. I never knew that 13th & Locust and the surrounding streets was a gay area, until my fionce and I walked into a resturant a few weeks ago (after the lights on south broad event). We went in at sat down, and just talked to each other. After a few minutes, no one was serving us. I looked up and then realized we were in a gay bar. We were getting some wierd stares, and the bartender was giving us the "get out of here" look. I really didn't care, we would of stayed and ate there but no one served us. We walked out and went somewhere else. So the whole point of my post...do most gays consider it rude if a heterosexual couple tries to go into a gay bar? We were not trying to offend anyone, but the vibe was telling us that people were pissed off because we were in there. |

What I want to know is: What's this guy's secret?
I'm openly gay and I live in this area. I walk down these streets day and night, and I think I'm pretty attractive. I haven't had a fellow grope me on the street in ages. Maybe if I'm lucky one will glance at me and hold the glance for just a little too long. And no one's ever blocked my path -- ever! I'm pissed. Now, if this guy's for real, I'm afraid I gotta call him homophobic if he's obsessing about a bunch of rainbow-flag-bottom street signs.

Maybe we can track Wayne down. He says that he works at the corner of Broad & Locust. That would narrow it down to the Doubletree Hotel, the Academy of Music, Varelli's Restaurants (Upstares & Sotto) and the Land Title Building. I'd eliminate the first three because he came from an insurance company in Dallas. What tenants are in the Land Title Building that he could possibly work for?

For your information, it's not pleasant to be assaulted by strange, large men on the street, I hate to break it to you. You sound like you want to be assaulted by strange men in an alley, which is sad, but not half as sad as the fact that you're somehow failing in this desire. Yeah sure, you're real attractive. And you "gotta call me homophobic." You're heterophobic. So I don't like being raped under a tree by some bald guy with a mustache, ok? Sorry if that makes me a homophobe. |

This hasn't been my experience in the Gayborhood. I've eaten and drank, alone and with others (same and opposite sex), at a lot of restaurants and bars in the area, including many that would fit the description of a "gay bar." I can't think of any time when I wasn't served/treated the same as anyone else in the place.
