Not being part of the gay community, I really am not qualified to say why with any real facts. The only comment I would make, is that overall Philly isn't as progressive or sophisticated as other major cities, to support a male strip club. In many ways Philadelphia is a repressed sexual city, and really doesn't go out on a limb to satisfy the sexual needs of many of its residents. I believe there is one male strip club, called The Cave, but I think it mainly appeals to women for "Ladies Night Out".

Several of the bars and clubs do feature strippers: Woody's used to on Friday (?) nights; Key West was known for having them; and Pure often does, depending on who's throwing the parties.

I do wish there were gay strip clubs here, but I'm not really crying over their absence. I was in Montreal recently and went to both male and female strip clubs, and found the ladies to be much more entertaining (and I'm a big mo). The dudes at Stock and Campus seemed unhappy to be onstage, uncomfortable to be naked or partially naked, and didn't do anything to entertain the audience. The ladies at Super Sexe, though, put on a great show with dancing so on.

Underlying this rather ridiculous comment seems to be the assumption that there is some singular entity called "The City" which determines what establishments open and where they go. If there are no gay strip clubs here, it's probably because local businesspeople haven't yet seen a market niche to fill, not because The City is too much of a prude to allow them.

I may be off target with my assumption, but I fail to see where my comments are ridiculous.

Since gays have been around, just about since the beginning of mankind, why hasn't Philadelphia yet come up with a gay strip club? Philly has always been last to jump on the sexual bandwagon.

Depends on what part of Market Street. Actually there have been some really great improvements made to Market Street in the last 20 years.

I just got back from SF yesterday, and I second (or third or whatever) the comments about the sad state of their nightlife. I avoided Castro like a plague, but the legendary SOMA scene was absolutely dead on a Saturday night.

As for male strip places, there are at least two full-time straight clubs in Philly and Key West has dancers (or at least guys in their underwear) on Wednesdays and Fridays. It's a pretty fun way to spend an evening (and a pocket full of singles), as long as you don't mind going home smelling like fried chicken....

Your examples between San Fran and philly and anywhere else are frivolous. I've been to everywhere from "shampoo" to "woodys" where the "strippers" are nothing more than customers and a couple of weight bearing hacks having a good time...if you're working yourself up over them ask them out...you may get lucky. Till' then keep your mind and your communicable to yourself rather than dispelling the greatest lil' hood in all of america.

Not gay, but my company does love the musique.

Did you live in Philadelphia in the 1980s? The gay nightlife was a lot busier (and more lurid) than it is now, and there was a lot more nightlife, and yeah--we had strippahs. Ask any city gay who lived here during that era.

Comparing us vs. NYC vs. Montreal, I would argue Montreal is the best out of the three. For a city that has roughly the same population size (but a smaller metro area), Montreal beats out NYC and Philly, from everything as a mundane coffee shop, to having three strip clubs.

I've visited two of them and they didn't seem that seedy to me at all, other than you have to realize that most the dancers on stage are actually straight.

Gay neighborhoods in general across the US are mostly being diluted by straight people who find gay neighborhoods desirable places to live. For straight DINK couples looking for city living, it seems that the first place they look is where the gays are living. That just comes down to economics.

Gays who have taken over and gentrified neighborhoods contribute a lot of money in property taxes on higher-valued property, so they're helping pay for schools and street upkeep, and they push out nefarious people like drug dealers and such as they buy and restore run-down properties. Once the gentrification is over, you have a nice, inclusive, inner-city neighborhood. It's a perfect formula for young straight couples who want to live closer to work. For instance, I walk around most of Washington Square West, and it's common to see straight people enjoying a date at a gay-oriented restaurant like More Than Just Ice Cream. Many straight people living in a gay neighborhood are just oblivious to their surroundings.

The only totally gay bar left on the west side of Broad these days is The Post, tucked in a tiny little box by Lil Pete's (haven't heard yet when it's reopening).

I don't think it's any coincidence that Woody's holds the PLCB record for the highest volume of alcohol sales for a single establishment in all of Pennsylvania, either.

That only tells me one thing. We don't have enough nightlife around here since the market is now Weiss & Co. and a few small players.

When looking for a "gold standard" that the Gayborhood should work itself up to, I would argue that we should look at what Montreal is doing and forget New York or any of the other US gay ghettos. They're all dying, while Montreal's is thriving.

If they're making it work for them up there, perhaps that formula can be reapplied here.

And since Chestnut Street was annexed into the Gayborhood [by those street signs], I don't find it comforting that anything other than Mitchell Gold+Bob Williams, a furniture company run by two fags, is about the only gay thing on my street--short of some gays who actually live in the apartments along Chestnut.

Other than that... 1100 and 1200 block of Chestnut still feel more like a Social Services superstore rather than part of the Gayborhood.
