9/14, quote on elections, because shosh had to put up that thoughtful writeup on mediocrity and elitism:
"As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron." — H. L. Mencken

One of the other US Cities that goes out of it's way to indentify the "Gayborhood" is Chicago with "Boystown". Chi-Town has erected permanet metal Rainbow Flags on light poles for blocks around Boystown.

It's a little over done to say the least, and to me as bad as Newark got with huge signs announcing when you arrived at Forest Hills (the most upscale section of Newark).

Between ms_evelyng and krapug1, my question's been answered, mostly.

Chicago and San Francisco are the two cities.

"Boys Town" on Chicago's north side has the big rainbow-flag pylons and light standard sculptures.

Someone said to me that the city has erected permanent signs on the streets of the Castro (also called Noe Valley), but I didn't see anything like that; a huge rainbow flag flies permanently over Harvey Milk Plaza, the main entrance to Castro Street MUNI station on the south side of Market Street.

Hmmm. Given his opening post, that sounds entirely plausible.

However, his current location is even more geographically ambiguous than he thinks. Does he mean to say that he lives near a Wawa convenience store -- which could put him in any of hundreds of neighborhoods throughout the 14-county extended Greater Philadelphia region (I still count Mercer County, NJ, as part of our region, regardless what the Census Bureau says) -- or near Wawa, Delaware County, where the chain is headquartered?

Oops, I just realised that the issues are the bad decors NOT the ambiance, am I right. Oh honey that's so gay!

Yeah, you got it.

It's not what it used to be, but Shampoo on a Friday night offers plenty of booty shakin' still. Pure is the place to go after all the others close (but a member will have to buy the drinks on your friend's behalf).

No matter what dance you really want to do, the dance you WILL do at Tavern on Camac is the Bump. The dance floor's that small and that jam-packed on weekends.

Woody's is still good for general-purpose booty shakin' and drunken debauchery, despite those comments about shady goings-on in the bathrooms and suchlike.

This is not in the US, but I know that Toronto has rainbow-bedecked street signs very similar to ours on the blocks surrounding Church & Wellesley (aka "The Gay Village). Do I get extra credit?

San Francisco is probably the last place on Earth you'd ever want to go to find a man, though.

I think the Internet has really taken its toll on gay bars, as it's subtracted a lot of people out of the gay nightlife who are solely interested in a hookup and really don't want to fool with getting to the bar, finding a way back home, and vetting whomever it is they're seeking. With hookup websites, chatrooms and webcams, a lot of these guys just found a reason not to even go to the bars, save for a holiday. [And personally, I don't think that's a bad thing... it removes a lot of people who are simply eff-ing annoying while I'm trying to enjoy my drink.]

This attitude though seems to only be contained in America. I wish Philly had more of a vibrancy that Montreal has right now [and New York used to have, but has since lost]. Very good music, awesome DJs, lots of very attractive people in their late 20s, 30s and 40s out, lots of stuff to do at night, the whole enchilada.

Compared to Montreal in terms of fun: Philly and now NYC feel like you're spending a weekend in your Jewish in-laws' 100-year-old mildewy bungalow.
I have to agree. Montreal by far is the best city I have ever visited when it comes to entertainment for the gay community, in regard to bars and clubs and music and let's not forget the strippers. oy vey

I hadn't heard this. What's the Triumph? Is this going into the old straight strip club? What kind of space are they envisioning?
