Exclamation Barnes Museum Move -Dead or Alive?-

I was wondering if this gem is still coming to the Parkway? It sure seems like this fine proposal is a win-win for Philadelphia and the Barnes. With financing in place and a location chosen I thought this project would be well underway by now. It would be very sad, if not tragic, to see this golden opportunity slip through the cracks. Why the delay? Or is this project shelved or cancelled? (like the proposed Calder project).

It's just hit a bit of a snag. The problem is before the Barnes goes up, the Youth Studies Center has to come down. And right now, thanks to Jannie Blackwell, there isn't a place to put the new Youth Studies Center. If/when that's worked out, things will proceed.

There's a deadline wrt moving the YSC. I recall that if it isn't worked out by
sometime next year, as to where it goes, the project may be in serious limbo.

Then there are people in Lower Merion(some of whom are the original
people who couldn't wait for the Barnes to move!) who are now
opposed to the move.

The intensely dumb thing about the YSC move to 48th and Haverford, opposed
by Jannie Blackwell, is the site is just a weedy, overgrown lot. There's
nothing there.

Talking it will happen

Its alive and well. This project is far to important for the YST to hold things up.

There are enough old empty buildings in this city to hold these kids.

Kenney had said the Barnes is going through and the new YSC is not a hold up to it. If there is no new center, they just have to move them somewhere else.

She probably opposes it because neither she nor any of her cronies has a stake in the property. I would imagine she's holding out for a new site that can bring a profit to her or her buds.

Might I suggest moving them to the current Barnes location? That should keep the neighbors happy.

Is there no one that can override Blackwell? This seams silly that 1 Councilperson could hold up a billion dollar art collection. Can the Youth Center only locate in Blackwell's district? Is there not enough vacant land options in this city to choose from? Good God, you would think that we're completely built out, every square inch of this city is built up and there is absolutely no other alternatives to places this center.

I hate to resort to a Negadelphia attitude, but losing this art museum would be a very typical Philadelphia outcome....

are some of you not liking the location of the YSC? Are you saying that putting it next to the Free Library and the Rodin museum on the parkway looking out towards the Art Museum is misplaced??? Yuppies!!!!
