without researching it I am pretty sure it is a zoning issue on the parkway which states buildings must be set back from the sidewalk (more than normal). Look at the Rodin, detention center, and the apartment community across the street.

This was highlighted as something to change during recent studies done that looked at potential improvements which could be made to the parkway.

I have to say, I really like the idea of keeping the original layout but blowing it up and adding the classrooms and gardens in between the galleries instead of around them. It sounds like a great creative reinterpretation that nonetheless remains true to Barnes's original vision.
As i tried to post yesterday, the new building needs to have a timeless quality, not just something new and "interesting". It needs to be beautiful.

There's a height restriction: buildings within 1500' of teh Parkway can only be so many stories tall. This is why the Bell Atlantic/Verizon building has champhered corners: it just narrowly misses the boundary line. I believe it's also why Park Town Place is set back as far as it is.

The Rodin is set back because the Mastbaums (the family that donated the collection and the museum) wanted a large garden court in front of the museum. The architect (Paul Cret) tried to talk them out of it, as it "hid" the building from the street. Eventually, he came up with the idea of creating the facade screen (based on fragments from a French villa that were in Rodin's studio) to give the museum a street presence and allow the garden court in front of the museum.

It's a museum, not an office building. I'd love to see them keep most of the trees for a more tranquil museum entrance. Whenever I move too quickly from traffic to impressionism, I get a headache.

After seeing the architect's work, it very well may be a loser. It definetly should be set back behind trees just in case. Besides it's too late now to try to change the look of the Parkway since the rest of it is already built.

Default Cost of construction increasing every day

Reading about projected cost over-runs for the convention center ($100M) has me wondering when this l-o-n-g delayed project is moving forward. The governer's comments about 'costs over-weighing benefits' regarding the convention center could apply to the Barne's, too. At some point this endeavor may not make economic sense.

Well unlike the convention center, there isn't any competition that is building a bigger Barnes in a couple of years after it opens.
