WHAT ???

How could this startling news not have its own thread by now ??? Where the fu*k is Fu%kula when we need him ?

Now, admittedly, not actually living in Philly, I don't have to put up with these every day - and the last time I was in town I didn't know to seek them out - but still I think I would miss them....sort of like finding out some relative you never knew you had has just died (well, OK, like finding out some relative you never knew you had has just been executed for being a serial killer).

But perhaps this angst is unneeded: assuming that you normally know whether you're bankrupt or not, methinks this is just a way of having a "going out of business sale" w/o actually going out of business, or running afoul of all the regs thereof: totally sleazy...not that there's anything wrong with that, of course.

next time i'm around 52nd street I'll see if my nearest City Blue is making the same announcement. If so, expect a blowout sale the likes of which Philly has never seen before.

The signs actually refer to "anti-bankruptcy prices".

I interpret this much as Hendi did: we need to get cash pronto, or else the next chapter in our story will be Chapter 11.

Or even worse, Chapter 13.

I haven't seen the signs yet, but it sounds like the same signs City Blue had last summer. It's a stupid advertising gimmick.

I'm sure, with enough public subsidies, Philly can get a downtown Nordstrom too. Heck, it can even be in the old strawbridges' space. However, then you'd have a situation like downtown Norfolk. You'd get the Nordstrom but not all the other stores (e.g., Apple Store, Crate and Barrel, Pottery Barn, etc.) of that shopping niche that Center City is missing.
I think the opportunity was there but was missed. PREIT decided to revitalize Cherry Hill Mall, to some extent, at Center City's loss. Cherry Hill will be their most cared for asset. It was just easier. The Gallery would have needed to be gutted most likely, and PREIT would have had to likely buy out the leases of Burlington Coat Factory and/or Kmart, or atleast Kmart. Not sure how that would work. And the amount of rentable building area might still be much less than CH's lot in the end.

But assuming they invested in The Gallery, while (disinvesting in the opportunity of Cherry Hill by making it a mid-range mall -- which is anyways nearer to the local demographics of Pennsauken), CC would get the area Nordstrom, Crate & Barrell and Apple store in Philly instead. Now atleast with Crate & Barrell, it maybe spatially too close as CH Mall is a mere 10 miles from Center City.

The suburban Voorhees and east Cherry Hill people with money could take PATCO in, rather than drivin on 70/38, which isn't such a bad thing, since its a lot cooler shopping, walking around, dining and eating in the city than in mall outparcels, but a little more expensive. The Burlington County folk with money could drive to a PATCO or RiverLine stop or directly into CC. The CH / Moorestown mall could have gotten a slight makeover to keep it decent, but keep the good stuff in Philly.

The suburban CH Mall location won this round unfortunately.

I'd think the city can easily handle 2 Maoz locations...heck, even more! haha I *love* that place, and I believe Philly is the only city in North America to have a Maoz, at least last time I checked; it's a European chain....now that's something Philly can toot its horn about! hehe
Actually there are two in NYC but the South Street Philly one was the first US location. The Walnut Street one is in addition to the South Street one.

so my info is dated, as expected. Because for a while (not sure how long the South St location has been open, but at least since 2004), Philly had the only location of Maoz in U.S.

9/14, quote on elections, because shosh had to put up that thoughtful writeup on mediocrity and elitism:
"As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron." — H. L. Mencken
