New York City drops sales tax on clothes, shoes
www.chinaview.cn 2007-09-02 13:40:56 Print

NEW YORK, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- As of Saturday, people shopping in New York will no longer have to pay the city taxes on purchases of clothes and shoes.

However, they still have to pay 4.375 percent in state tax on items at or above 110 U.S. dollars.
Prior to the new measure, which was proposed by Mayor Michael Bloomberg and came into effect Saturday, shoppers had to pay 4 percent in city sales tax and 4.375 in state sales tax when they buy clothes and shoes priced at 110 dollars and over.
Bloomberg proposed the measure as part of a 1.3-billion-dollar tax relief package that also includes cutting property taxes. The sales tax break was approved by the state and signed into law on June 29.
When I was in New York in early 2007, a more tax-unfriendly law was passed, so this looks like they altered it -- there was no tax at all on clothing unless the purchase was at least $700 or $1000, something like that. (Perhaps they didn't remove the tax for shoes back then.) I'm wondering why this changed.

Is anyone else excited about Guess coming on Walnut St.?

Anyone know the opening date? I passed by their storefront the other day. I love how it looks.

According to the realtor's web site it is undergoing interior and facade renovations (maybe somthing went wrong?) and the 1st floor retail space (former travel agent) is still available. Google is amazing isn't it?

Sorry hunny, but no. Try the other place on South near 4th, or 18th & Walnut (and it's time for me to stop posting since my brain farts are kicking in ).
