Has this been mentioned already, if not I'd be suprised but just to make sure.
From Foobooz today: "Yesterday, a very helpful sales associate at the Center City Macy’s (or, as we like to still call it, John Wanamaker’s) told us that they will be adding a housewares department on the third floor in October. No furniture, but lots of tabletop and linens." Can anyone confirm this? |

Well, if another Loehmann's doesn't open in town, I think I'm going to give in and just start going to NYC for clothes shopping. Ugh.
Not that there isn't plenty of nice clothes down here, just none I can afford. I swear 90% of my wardrobe is from Loehmann's. |

Unlike PA, there is sales tax on clothing in NY, 8% I think it is.

New York City drops sales tax on clothes, shoes www.chinaview.cn NEW YORK, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- As of Saturday, people shopping in New York will no longer have to pay the city taxes on purchases of clothes and shoes. However, they still have to pay 4.375 percent in state tax on items at or above 110 U.S. dollars. Prior to the new measure, which was proposed by Mayor Michael Bloomberg and came into effect Saturday, shoppers had to pay 4 percent in city sales tax and 4.375 in state sales tax when they buy clothes and shoes priced at 110 dollars and over. Bloomberg proposed the measure as part of a 1.3-billion-dollar tax relief package that also includes cutting property taxes. The sales tax break was approved by the state and signed into law on June 29. |

Loehmann's doesn't do any advertising that I know of. Most people don't know about them. I don't see them as a big enough chain to pay center city rents. I think TJ Maxx/Marshall's, Filenes Basement, even Stein Mart are bigger off price discounters. I know this is very suburban, but perhaps Kohl's would be mid-range and affordable and could work somewhere in the city. If the city can have Olive Garden, not a big leap really for Kohl's. A lot of the other failing stores, like Linens N Things, were overpriced or didn't sell enough product people would buy. Last edited by chris12 : 04-18-2008 at 09:34 PM. |
