Default Hausbrandt Yuck!

I just got my first Hausbrandt coffee. Not only did it cost $2, which is more than La Columbe, Starbucks, Last Drop and every other coffee shop, with the exception of a fair-trade, shade-grown coffee. It is weak. I ordered my coffee to go and the lid leaked all the way back to the office.

I knew I shouldn't order coffee at place with a German name and Italian decor.

Fortunately I can add a shot of espresso to this mess at work for free.

As for that AOL City Guide Best Of that they've posted in their window, obviously AOL users need to get away from their computers more often.

If you truly love good coffee, stay away from Hausbrandt. A greasy spoon would be ashamed of this coffee.

Typically, their coffee is good. Must've been an unfortunate coffee pot. As far as leaking lids go -- is it really their fault??

a friend in philly raves about Hausbrandt...it's on the same street where the friend lives (15th, and close a bit south of broad--that area). I had chai there while i was visting. it was pretty good. not the "awesomest" coffee shop i ever visited.

I think Joe's on 11th and Broad is pretty cool. They have fair-trade coffee.

edit:

damn...I didn't mean Broad. I meant Walnut. Sorry! :o

Not sure if you were just trying to be funny, but not all Italian names end in a vowel.

Leaky lids are one of the perils of getting coffee to go.

Anyhow, I go to Hausbrandt a couple of times a month and have yet to have a bad cup. If you give them another chance, you might be surprised.

Phillaggie, I love your enthusiasm, but your sense of streets is a little off still. You need another visit!

Broad ~ 14th, so Broad and 11th run the same way. Pick another cross street.

Hausbrandt, everytime I have been in there, seems to be THE hangout for especially ex-pat Italians, so they must be doing something right. Go for the espresso. Milk in the coffee is only for mornings.

WWD is correct (eek, we agree on something), Northern Italians, closer to the Austrian/Tyrolean border have more germanic sounding names.

It's true about the ex-pats. At night, i've found the place to be overrun by the MacBook set.

My only complaint with Hbt is that it closes too early (8:00 during the week, 7:00 weekends) so i end up going to the inferior Capriccio.

Joe Coffee Bar is located on 11th and Walnut. They have great coffee and its Organic and Fair Trade. He just won an award from Co-op America. I highly recommend this place for coffee if you are in area.

http://www.coopamerica.org/

"Finally, in recognition of an exceptionally strong standing against some much larger businesses, we awarded a special Local Leadership award to Joe Coffee Bar. A local coffee house in Philadelphia, Joe Coffee Bar pulled in many hundreds of votes from loyal customers eager to rave about how happy they are that Joe's is a part of their lives. In addition to offering organic and Fair Trade coffee, tea, and cocoa, Joe Coffee Bar's sustainability commitment includes purchasing local and organic produce and dairy products, in-store recycling and energy conservation, and frequent use of the coffee bar as meeting space for local community groups."

I have a bad sense of direction, but I don't think it's just me on this one...
