phillyaggie is our friend from Texas who loves CC. He has his cross streets mixed up. No biggie.

I haven't been impressed with either haus or joe. If you're in the area of haus, nearby cafe loftus at 15th and sansom? serves la colombe. oddly, the puerto rican coffee sold at joe's drew sneers from the two puerto ricans I was with when I went in to see what kind they had. "worst coffee on the island" they said. who knows if it's true, but it costs as much as alto grande. coffee is, to a alrge extent, a subjective affair. unless you mean burning the hell out of the beans (starbucks) or maxwell house.

I'm sure phillyaggie will get it straight when he moves here from Texas.

The much vaunted DD's beans gag me. I don't know why people think that an espresso roast means you have to burn the s**t out of them. Anything made with their espresso is virtually undrinkable.

Phillaggie, I love your enthusiasm, but your sense of streets is a little off still. You need another visit!

Broad ~ 14th, so Broad and 11th run the same way. Pick another cross street.
yeah, my bad. I meant to say Walnut instead of Broad. Joe's is a bit west of 11th, on Walnut. And Hausbrandt is a bit south of Walnut, on 15th. I think I got it straight in my head now.

I think I already know a whole lot more about places in and around Center City than I do about Dallas! :o But I live in Arlington so I am right now a suburbanite and you can still snicker at me...

not that I have tasted all the various coffees there are out there, but from what I know, if you love coffee, you will appreciate the Jamaican Blue Mountain...you can mail-order it.

http://www.bluemountaincoffee.com/

Their cheapest 16oz goes for $28.90.

Hausbrandt's coffe is pretty good, although I agree that Cafe Loftus just up the block is a little better.

But, the people at Hausbrandt are sooo nice that I like to support their venture. Even though I don't understand it, I just love to hear them speak Italian to each other and everyone who works there has been super friendly. Plus, I would highly recommend trying some of their sandwiches and salads. I have tried a bunch of their sandwiches (1/2, whole or ciabbata) and all have been quite tasty. They are all in the display window and they grill them up for you. A good lunch.

As for the name, I believe Hausbrandt coffee is based out of Trieste, Italy, which is right on the border with Slovenia and has a huge population of Italians of Germanic and Austrian descent. So, the name makes it no less Italian.

I worked as a process engineer at Maxwell House's biggest plant in North America... helped them with start-up and commissioning of a new process unit which take the leftover beans from the perc unit (beans that've already been through the industrial-strength percolation process) and feeding them into this high-temperature, high-pressure counter-current steam flow reactor. The beans pumped from down and steam injected from top of a 70-foot reactor column. You get more "juices" out of the beans, about 12-15% more. But it's also a little more bitter and the sugars and not what you want...so there's more processing after that, mostly hydrolizing. The beans coming out of the reactor are almost bone dry, get pressed to get remaining "mother liquor" and then get sent to the plant's steam generator to be burnt as fuel.

Very efficient process. But imagine the kind of coffee you get. I have an insider's view of it....

There's a reason for it....

KRAMER: So, what do you think?
JERRY: About what?
KRAMER: About the opera.
JERRY: Nah, I don't wanna go.
KRAMER: You gotta go.
JERRY: I-I-I don't like the opera. What are they singing for? Who sings?
You got something to say, say it!
KRAMER: Jerry, you don't understand, thatıs the way they talk in Italy,
they sing to one another.
Kramer starts to sing in bad Italian.
JERRY: All right, all right.
KRAMER: Thatıs the way it was, you know. You listen to the language, its
got that sing songy quality. Itıs the language Jerry, the language
JERRY: So why don't they talk like that now?
KRAMER: Well its, uh, well its too hard to keep up, you know, they were
tired.
