Well. How about a wanna-be-gay-borhood? Or, better yet, bi-borhood?

Reminds me of the Holiday Inn around 13th and Walnut, that's been calling itself "midtown" forever .... it's like they're trying to be manhatten :what_is_:

Default What's in a name?

Those of us who know probably will continue to call it whatever we've been calling it...but to a lot of those who don't, "13th Street" carries with it a disreputable association. The street is not as seedy as it used to be -- that's a fact, even with the Full Moon Saloon still in business and the hustlers still hanging out from time to time.

"The Gayborhood" overlaps with but does not include the entire stretch of 13th Street in question. "WashWest," as noted earlier, also does not include all of this stretch of 13th Street, and it also describes a much larger area than either "Midtown Village" or "the Gayborhood."

So...are you suggesting that those who don't know should continue to labor under the impression that this area is still dangerous? And though a name change does not alter an underlying reality (would a rose by any other name...), sometimes if the reality changes, the name still retains the old associations. Hence this effort.

I see what you're saying here, but I still think that this supposed renaming of an area is contrived and artificial. However, I guess you could say the same thing about the namings of Queen Village, Bella Vista, University City, and probably Old City (which is still sometimes spelled "Olde" ... ick). In any case, the term "Midtown" is strongly idenitified with Manhattan, and despite Steven Starr's best efforts, Philadelphians are not going to refer to any part of Center City with it. People will call the area 13th St, Gayborhood, WashWest, or whatever, but "Midtown Village" will be tossed into the same bin as "B3."

There are drug dealers and transvestite hookers. Personally, I consider that shady.
