Personally I prefer Ikea....I am amazed they can sell so low and some (but not all) of thier pieces are beautiful.
DWR doesn't sell reproductions, they sell the actual pieces. They specialize in authentic modern, classic, designs that have been in production since their creation. They only sell pieces from the original manufacturer or the current authorized manufacturer.

Maybe reproduction is the wrong word.....but does that mean there is no difference in value between a piece manufactured this year and one manufactured in 1947 ?

Definitely. They sell THE icons of modern furniture design. Look at the list of designers the sell, it's a virtual hall of fame of 20th century designers. Corbu, Wright, Eames, Alessi, Newson, Noguchi, Aalto, Starck, Rashid, Gehry, Mies, Mackintosh, Pesce, Saarinen.... No other company can match that amount of talent.

While the closest store near here is in new york, you might want to try the room and board catalog www.roomandboard.com. My wife and I bought some furniture there and had it delivered. I believe they do a flat 100 or 200 for whatever you order. We bought a steel four post bed from there that we love.

This may be a bit out of your budget, but the Matthew Izzo store on Walnut sells sofas, etc. without the West Elm/Pottery Barn/Crate & Barrell cookie cutter element.

Also, for more "traditional" furniture, there is a store in Old City right on the corner at 2d and Arch (at least I think it is Arch). Don't know the name. You won't get Ikea prices, but the quality and service are excellent.
As to other catalogs, Chiasso has the same retro/modern style as a lot of other stores but their furniture is slightly better quality and still reasonable. You cant get a $299 sofa like at Ikea, but right now they have one sofa on sale for $600 and other prices are under $1000. http://www.chiasso.com

Grossman Furniture. I live right there and can honestly say that I've never seen anyone in there.

Thanks for the name. I was in there a few months ago on a Saturday afternoon and there were at least 10 people/couples browsing. We just wandered in after seeing an interesting sofa in their window. They may have also had a sale sign in the window that attracted my attention. The store is laid out very strangely on several floors and half floors with lots of small stairwells, which, I think, makes it look empty and like they don't have that much to sell. Even though I was clearly just browsing, they answered questions about fabric choices, delivery times, etc. graciously.
