I'm moving up (in more than one way) to Philly this summer from Delaware (half way between delete and beware) and wanted to ask a question or three. I've been lurking and enjoyed reading you-guys's posts - you sure do love this city, dontchya? Well, me too. Here's the questions:
Any recommendations specifically for vegetarians? I'll shop at WholeFoods when I can afford it, but for the other 51 weeks out of the year, are there any farmers markets or such-n-such? Would someone please tell me what (generally) defines the safe section of the museum area? I'll be biking some 'hoods soon, but I wanted to get an idea of what delimits the safe (or if it's easier, the unsafe) blocks. Finally, a post on this forum turned me on to Craigslist.com. I'm looking at apts. as well as jobs. Are you keeping any other secrets from me??? Okay thats all. Thanks folks. Looking forward to being your proverbial neighbor! :drinking: |

an excellent market
http://www.readingterminalmarket.org/ better than Whole Foods and cheaper. also, the famous Italian Market from Rocky http://www.phillyitalianmarket.com/market/9thstreet.htm those are the two biggest. depending on where you live, thera are a number of small seasonal markets which are god for picknig up some fresh foods on the way home http://www.thefoodtrust.org/markets.html#info in west philly/univ city there is the firehouse farmer's market at 50th abd baltimore. there is also a fresh bakery out there. http://citypaper.net/articles/021998/cb.fresh.shtml there's another one that is supposed to be good in the northwest section of the city or just outside city limits. I'm sure ther are more that I'm missing but these are the big ones. |

You're in luck - the Inquirer published a list of this year's farmer's markets today:

Also a vegetarian in Philadelphia who moved up from DE. I don't mind shopping at SuperFresh on South St and I enjoy the exercise of carrying bags of groceries to my apartment in the art museum area. I shop at Trader Joe's and Whole Foods too, but I tend to buy select items from those places - cheap cereal at Trader Joe's. I'll occasionally run to a Wawa or Wal-Greens for something like peanut butter or mac & cheese. In general, my shopping has now become very distributive. There's also some Korean market I was told of from someone in my apartment that apparently has fresh fruits and vegetables? Somewhere near 19th and Market? I never went looking for it.
Very easy to be a vegetarian in Center City and not break the bank, I think.

"Between delete and beware"...I love it.
There are a reasonable number of veggie restaurants too, I understand, such as Harmony, which is supposedly very good. I qualify all these because I am decidedly non-vegetarian. But I think you can be veggie & eat very well here. If you're thinking of the so-called Art Museum area, I will say that, in general, the neighborhoods to the north of Girard Avenue and the east of about 18th or 19th Street (north of Spring Garden St.) still show a fair amount of abandonment and dereliction and also the various social ills that come with that, including higher crime rates. (Can you tell I don't like saying "bad area"?) Just a week or so ago a couple of people were shot dead on 29th St. just north of Girard. That being said, I don't see any reason you couldn't bike along these streets in the daytime at least. Closer in it's fine. |

Just moved from Brooklyn and missing my well-stocked, low-priced organic food coop in a sad, worried, whiny way.
Please help me acclimate like a grown-up. Are there good places to buy organic or locally grown produce near my Rittenhouse-area apartment? |

Try Sue's Produce, 18th Street south of Chestnut. They have a nice selection in general, including organic items.
Also, on Walnut Street along Rittenhouse Square a couple of mornings a week (I'm thinking Tuesdays and Saturdays?) there is a seasonal farmers market. Small but local and/or organic. |

El hit the 2 big ones. There are two good organic stands at the Terminal: Livengood's (Saturday only) and the Fair Food Farmstand (Thurs, Fri, Saturday). Fair Food sends a weekly e-mail listing their offerings. There is also a farmstand in front of the 12th Street Gym (12th between Walnut and Locust) on Tuesdays from 2:00 to 6ish. |

Not exactly close, but it is great and well stocked is the Marriposa Food Co-Op in West Philly. http://www.mariposa.coop/
