Bank of America Corp. said Wednesday it plans to eliminate 850 of the 1,500 jobs at a Fleet Bank operations facility in Horsham, Pa., as part of its $48 billion merger with Fleet.
Bank of America spokeswoman Eloise Hale said employees at the facility -- which houses part of Fleet's credit card operations -- were notified of the cuts Wednesday. Charlotte, N.C.-based Bank of America said April 5 it planned to eliminate 12,500 jobs over the next two years as part of the Fleet acquisition. That merger became official April 1.
"We're letting our associates know now because we think it is the right thing to do," Hale said.
Hale said the cuts would not occur for at least six months and would be finished taking place within 12 months. Those who are laid off will be given an opportunity to find new jobs within the bank. Those who do not get jobs will get career counseling, extended benefits and severance pay.
