Default Ebay: How good/bad is it?

EBay Halts Alleged Sale of Three Girls
By RACHEL KONRAD, The Associated Press
http://www.phillyburbs.com/pb-dyn/ne...email=referrer

Quote:
SAN JOSE, Calif. - EBay halted an auction this week and suspended a Taiwanese user who allegedly tried to sell three Vietnamese girls on the Internet site for a starting bid of $5,400.

The auction, which began March 2 on eBay's Taiwan site, did not include a detailed description of the goods for sale but said the "items" were from Vietnam and would be "shipped to Taiwan only."

The site included five photos of three people. One dark-haired woman in a white shirt wore makeup and blue nail polish, and the other two appeared to be girls no older than their early teens. The 10-day auction had a starting price of 180,000 Taiwanese dollars, or $5,411.
Question: Why did it take so long to find and halt this auction?

If you ever search on ebay you can find tons of random stuff. Millions of items are auctioned everyday. Ebay does do searches for it's illegal items (Drugs, body parts, etc) but I'm sure one or two do slip through the cracks.

The funniest ones I've seen on ebay are:
Ark of the Covenant
Noah's Ark
planet Jupiter
human souls
a used tube of tooth past
imaginary girl friend
"One good ass-kicking"

Friend of mine tried to auction me off on ebay once. He listed me as "Housebroken and can take care of himself most of the time." My closing price was $13.25.

First of all, even the thought of selling another human being is not funny or a joking matter in any way shape or form. It is disgraceful and indicative of a larger problem of human rights abuses that are happening on a broad scale in the world we live in.

There was a very sad story on NPR last month about the trafficking of young woman who are lured to leave poor Eastern European, South American, and Asian nations, promised jobs as nannies and secretaries in the U.S., then enslaved, raped repeatedly, auctioned off, and pimped out after getting on a plane to Mexico. This is not a joke, it is a huge problem that needs to be addressed. Selling of babies from Asian countries is another problem as evidenced by this E-Bay controversy.

A large part of the problem is that people think it is all a huge joke- like several of the previous posters here on this thread. This problem is not a joke- these human rights abuses are a life or death matter that affect millions of lives.

Let's all be a bit more sensitive to the plight of people oppressed by human rights abuses in countries that do not protect or guarantee the rights we enjoy and all too often take for granted here in America.

Here is an excerpt from a NY Times article on the subject:

Stopping The Traffickers

By NICHOLAS D. KRISTOF (NYT) - When I was in Cambodia recently, writing about two teenage prostitutes whose freedom I had purchased, Srey Neth and Srey Mom, readers started sending me frantic e-mail along the lines of: I'll wire you some money if you'll free one for me, ... But buying sex slaves and freeing them...
Let's stop sitting quietly making jokes about these despicable practices and start standing up against them and speaking up for the human rights of the least and the lost in our world.

Peace,

John

All I am saying is that the story Steve cited is indicative of a large global problem of women and children being denied their human rights and literally sold off to the highest bidder. You can joke about it all you want but it is a huge problem that affects millions of people around the world who encounter unconscionable abuse at the hands of their deceptive abductors.

I used Ebay quite a bit for both casual buying and selling. I think it's the bet thing to hit the internet since chat forums. There are some quirks about it of course, but it's still young and has to mature.

But hey, it's like shopping at the biggest flea market/garage sale without leaving your desk.

I have heard that EBay is a great place to sell and buy items that you may not be able to get a fair price for if you trade it in to a dealer.

An example that comes to mind is a musical instrument. I am a musician and considering upgrading to a higher end guitar. I have checked into this, and can get close to $200 more on EBay than if I sell it to a Music Store- partly because the music store has to make a cut of the profit, so they will not buy it for what it is worth.

As far as buying on EBay-from what I have heard, it is best to look at the sellers reviews and rating before you buy just to be sure that others have had a good experience with them.

And, as with any major purchase caveat emptor (buyer beware).

Peace,

J
