I have noticed a "Sang Kee Bistro" in Wynnewood that seems to be doing quite good business. Does it have any relation to the Sang Kee Peking Duck House, perhaps Chinatown's best restaurant?
And is it good enough to justify the one-hour wait they had on Sunday night??? |

I just moved here, so I don't know whether the restaurant is related to one in Chinatown, but I've had lunch there and the food is very, very good. The prices were incredibly reasonable for lunch; don't know about dinner.

I preferred the old Sang Kee before they remodeled. It almost appeared like you were eating in the kitchen because the place was so bare. The guy making the duck was in one corner and the waiters might drip some of the duck sauce onto you as they whizzed by to deliver the duck to the table in the corner.
Then they bought the place next door and in came all the amenities and the yuppies. So it goes ..... I prefer the basics .... good food with little showmanship to go along with it. PS~ As you may have guessed, I rarely eat Steven Starr's comfort food at Jones as my own grilled cheese is better and I do not have to ante up the $14 to pay for valet parking to go with my bill for the grilled cheese. The Wynnewood location is the same owners as the one in Chinatown. It's got a pricier scaled down menu, but the favorites are still there. (If you can read chinese, you can request their chinese menu which has things not listed in the normal one.) Also some additions that you won't find in the Chinatown Sang Kee (like pad thai entree).
Good thing for those who drive...parking is free and you don't have to fight for it, but that's at the cost of the pricier menu. |

I'm glad to hear it's not just a ripoff of the name--like Ray's Pizza, Original Ray's Pizza, etc. (or the two Bookbinder's restaurants). I will definitely eat there--although maybe on a weeknight so I don't have to wait an hour.
I didn't notice any quality dop when the 9th and Vine location expanded, but the atmosphere changed quite a bit, I agree. I really liked the old hole-in-the-wall place--when I ate upstairs, I always seemed to be with large groups of locals celebrating birthdays, which made it more enjoyable. And if you atre downstairs, there was barely any room to move. I've only eaten there a couple times since the expansion. |
