yeah im not sure if it was really a big problem and no matter what hapepned to this kid people have been killed on this section of tracks many times. That section should definately be fenced off as much as possible.
Also: im not sure if there are many problems with cars being hit by trollyeys that cross the intersections but driving through those cross roads are like rolling dice. They should put up bars at the garret, edmonds, and burmont cross overs. You never know a trains coming until you actually see on the lights do do a thing. |

I grew up fairly near freight train tracks and I know we kids used walk ON the tracks a lot. Of course, we were on a stretch where you had lost of warning from whistles when a train was coming and freight trains move pretty slowly -- we always had plenty of time to get out of the way, but a walkman then (now an ipod) might make that dicey. I know I walked the tracks with a walkman on at least a few times. There were street crossings all along, though, so the warning lights on the signals and the sight of bars going down could cue you even if you couldn't hear. Still, cars and motorcycles got hit from time to time -- and, yes this was inside the city limits of a large city, not out in the country. Tracks are dangerous places and maybe more should be done to discourage people walking across or down them but I worry that safety fences too close might mean no place to run from danger when a train comes. Maybe extra signal lights where there aren't even cross streets would help alert kids who are bound to walk there even if they shouldn't.

FWIW, I came across a Myspace blog post about this tragedy a few weeks ago that shocked me.
Before I post an excerpt, I will state that I don't know the person who wrote it at all, other than his profile which states he is a male in his 40s from Delco. I came across his profile from someone else's, and so forth and so on. Therefore, I can make no claims to the credibility of any of the information in this post. I'm simply reposting something written on that site. And I don't know if it's really true that the kid was found naked on the tracks, either: "Last night I received a phone call from my friend J. who was despondent over the state of her son's well being. I know J. is an amazing Mom so I know something was very wrong... Saturday night in Drexel Hill a trolley ran over a young man from the local middle school. The boy was the childhood friend of J.'s son and who had been at many a sleepover with her son and grew up with her son. Last night's phone call, J. told me the story of the incident. The young boy had been with his girlfriend and a buddy at a local pizzeria and walked the young girl to her Mother's car. They walked along the trolley tracks and the young boy stopped to take a piss along the tracks and his friend and girlfriend walked further to the girl's Mom's car. The boy dropped his friends girlfriend and came back looking for his friend. To no avail. His friend thought his friend had left. Monday at the local Middle school a 13 year old student was bragging to students he beat the **** out of this young boy with two of his buddies and he got what was coming to him. J. told me what had happened....the boy had been struck with a tire iron, placed on the tracks and his clothes removed from him. The boys bragged about what they did and now a young boy is dead and his body dragged and placed on a trolley track and he is further disgraced by the removal of his clothes." Like I said, I don't know if part, or any, of this information is true. It's very sad, though. ![]() |

SEPTA could only put electrified fences up to keep people off the tracks.

I don't think any changes need to be made to the tracks or the barriers. THe story I heard from supposed "people in the know" was the that kid was intoxicated and passed out on the tracks. I think it's probably smartest to wait until we actually know what happened until we decide to start raising a stink.
Seriously, if you can avoid a car you can avoid the trolley. It's on tracks ferrcrissakes. |
