I'm considering moving to Conshohocken, and I'm wondering where the best places in the city are to look for apartments. I've searched on Craigslist, but since I'm coming from out of state, it's difficult to judge whether the apartments are in nice locations or not. Are there any buildings there to consider? Or any streets I should check out if I drive through?

Most of Conshy is a pretty good area. With the possible exception of Elm St & Hector down somewhere around 2nd to 4th street or so, however I'm sure it's improving. Somewhere around there are a few seedy blocks. For the most part you would just have a bad neighbor or two. Ideally you'd like to be on the avenues, it goes from 1st to 15th. Fayettes street is a 'Main St' district with a few bars & resturants up to about 3rd st. Down past the avenues is more of a suburban feel to it, whereas from about 9th to 1st street is more of a city/rowhome atmosphere, so it depends on your taste. The are alot of converted homes and apartments down there, or if you like apartment complexes there is Plymouth Gardens. FWIW there's a newer complex called the Millenium down on the river, however I've heard the walls are paper thin.. Just thought I'd let you know.

Everywhere else, open season. Not sure why that area is so bad, I'm guessing its low-income or Section 8 housing, but I am not sure. Everywhere else is pretty good. Plenty of parking, well lit streets.

The streets are numbered 1st Ave up to 15th Ave. The "main drag" is between 1st and 3rd/4th Ave. Fayette Street is the dividing line between East and West sides of the town. If you want to be near the SEPTA train station, then stay on the West side. If you want to be near the bike path, then stay in the lower numbers. There is a fairly large park (walking trail, baseball/basketball, etc) between West 7th and West 10th Aves.

Rentals should be popping up fairly soon, as the local colleges have just ended terms a few weeks ago. Send me a PM if you want more info..

A few friends of mine used to live in Sherry Lake apartments. The units were nice — very quiet and completely safe — but a bit expensive. Also, the place is at the north end of Conshy, not walking distance to the bars and restaurants but one minute away from the supermarket and other stores on Ridge Avenue. So, it depends on what you want to be near: restaurants and easy access to the city on the south end, or shopping and access to the surrounding suburbs on the north end. Where will you be working? Factor your work commute into the equation.

I think that is the North Lane Apartments.

Conshy has loads of big old houses that are 4 to 8 apartments. About 6 months ago there were a dozen places with apartment for rent signs up close by me near 5th Ave. I've been in Conshy for almost 10 years now.

I disagree with the posts that say Hector and Elm Streets are bad news, and to stay away. My opinion is that they are not the nicest parts of Conshy, but you probably wont have any trouble there. It is not like you are talking about North Philly or some other high crime area like that. I know people who live on those "bad" blocks, and I previously lived just around the corner from one, and had no issues whatsoever.

It comes down to a matter of opinion, I suppose.

I've lived on Elm St. for a few years and I agree. It's only bad to the extent that there's an occasional strange character or two stumbling down the sidewalk at night which is nothing you don't see in good city neighborhoods. Of course I'm a 200+LB male but I never thought of it as at all scary/threatening.

They might have been bad 20 years ago when most of the block was section 8. But I was just down there walking with my kids because my daughters friend lives there. That part of Elm can be high traffic but otherwise it's not too bad.
