There is nothing wrong with blue collar people. But rich people certainly don't want to live near them or anyone with less money than themselves for that matter, hence the less expensive housing in Haverford/Havertown.

I live on the Main Line (Ardmore) in a neighborhood with doctors, lawyers, teachers, librarians, contractors, cops, retired people. What you read in Philadelphia Mag does not reflect the reality of Lower Merion. Yes, of course, there are snobby, wealthy people. But there also is housing stock for people w/average incomes. The houses in my neighborhood are in the $260K to $320K range. The irony of a place like Havertown is that the "great place to raise a family" is okay if you're white. People can say what they will re: Lower Merion, but if you're black, or a mixed-race couple/family, gay, or otherwise a non-traditional white American, you will be much happier in LM than in Havertown. Trust me. Ardmore, Haverford, and Bryn Mawr all work well if you're not lily white or your flamboyant, gay uncle is in from Manhattan. Havertown doesn't work as well. Lower Merion not only has great schools, it's more racially and economically diverse than Havertown, and the people are more open-minded and urbane. The black population of Ardmore, for example, is something like 12 or 13 percent, which reflects the make-up of the U.S. population.

being blue collar!), why do a lot of them aspire, and work so hard, to send their kids to college? That tells me that they either don't see a future for a lot of blue collar people to be able to find work in this country or they feel inferior about being blue collar. |

What I do know: there is a growing shortage of skilled blue collar folks. You wouldn't believe the $$$ some of my blue collar friends make since their skill sets are so hard to find. |

I was just simply giving my opinion to the OP. For the record, I don't live, and never have lived, on the Main Line at all. Nice try, thanks for playing. As for "fleeing from the problem"--I was 10 years old when my family moved out of UD, and you have no idea what the circumstances were surrounding our move. There's an enormous difference between people who are blue collar and those Section-8, welfare-collecting trash who repeatedly take advantage of the system. Why would anyone who takes pride in their home and cares about the safety of their children want to stay in a neighborhood where they're surrounded by that? Many neighborhoods in Delco are decidedly blue collar, but the residents actually give a damn about their properties, have respect for their neighbors, and are productive members of society. I was referring to the areas where that is NOT the case, and yes, there are quite a few sections of Havertown (and even more in UD) that are like that. ![]() |

As mentioned previously, Llanerch has some blocks that are worse than others, near the diner. Near the Kirklyn section of UD, specifically.
Westwood Park, near the LA Fitness on West Chester Pike, is hit-or-miss. There are also some questionable areas off Darby Road, near the intersections of both Eagle Road and Manoa Road, and a little stretch of Lawrence Road, near Lynwood Elementary. Westgate Park is nice. Chatham is nice. Bon Air is nice. |
