Three teenage boys charged with threatening to kill fellow students and staff at Winslow Township High School face a court hearing today. The boys are charged with making terroristic threats and conspiracy. The 14-year-old also is charged with a second count of making terroristic threats and one count of simple assault, for allegedly grabbing a female juvenile by the neck on March 15, at the high school, and telling her he would kill her. Investigators said the boys had discussed plans to shoot numerous individuals in the school cafeteria during a lunch period this month, as well as at residences and other locations. Winslow Township Police and members of the prosecutor's office, including victim-witness counselors, were notifying about 25 people, both juveniles and adults, who were named as potential targets. http://www.courierpostonline.com/app...604060401/1006 |

The local newspaper carried another story, about a girl who is a student at Washington Twp (NJ ) High, who maintained a list of people she wanted to kill, on myspace. Incidentally, that is the high school my oldest would have been attending if we were not moving this summer. Here is a news story online about it: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12290681/

While no one can dispute that crime in cities is greater than in suburbs, crime in the suburbs is clearly growing faster. There is nothing in a suburban location that stops the existence of street crime, and much that both attracts criminals and leads citizens to leave their guard down.
It is easier to cover up the commission of non-obvious murders there, because the police are less suspicious of so-called accidents. And crime sometimes goes to the suburbs for the same reason that Jesse James robbed banks: James said he robbed banks because "That's where the money is." If one excludes the large number of crimes that are committed both against criminals by other criminals and against people in poverty by other people in poverty, the crime rate against middle class Philadelphians is far lower than the crime rate against the city as a whole. It is still higher than the crime rate in many suburbs, but not so high that people should be paralyzed by fear.

Thank you NBC10!
You want to compare the city with the burbs? http://www.nbc10.com/news/9531203/detail.html PHILADELPHIA -- Philadelphia is reeling from a burst of violence that made it a deadly weekend, according to police. As of Monday, there have been 214 murders in Philadelphia this year. The cabbie was pumping gas at a service station when someone walked up to him and shot him in the back of the head. He was pronounced dead at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. http://abclocal.go.com/wpvi/story?se...cal&id=4368014 July 15, 2006 - There was a violent home invasion in the Port Richmond section of the City early Saturday morning. I realize Philly is having a big crime surge right now, but since its so far away from the part of Philly we're in, I only hear of it when I come here, or watch local news. Where I am its so quiet a pin could drop and you'd hear it.
I feel safer here than in the NJ burbs because out there, I always felt a crook could hide behind one of the bushes or run off into the woods...I used to be afraid to go out in the back yard at night. It just LOOKED scary and it was so dark, not as much lighting as in the city. The homes were further apart too, which for me added to my feeling of isolation and aloneness. Here in the city, the houses are a bit closer (but still far enough away for personal comfort)...yet close enough that we know our neighbors better, and it tends to lead to a safer feeling, even if its deceptive. Even my husband said this, and he did not want to move back to Philly! Even the wild animals are friendlier here....the bunnies and squirrels on our front lawn come up and sometimes eat carrots, etc out of our hands. In the burbs they'd run the minute they saw a human.
