You and I need to hang! I had to move to Wash. Twp in 2002 to take care of two elderly relatives. At the time I thought it would be OK although I knew I'd miss South Philly. I'm now moving home this summer....recently a guy was killed in his home in Washington Twp and they tried to blame it on the fact that he owns an auto body shop IN PHILADELPHIA (typical burb snobs..."if we DO have crime, it got dragged here from PHILLY!") Like you, people here are making me feel like a crackpot for actually WANTING to go home to Philly....^%$%^ all of them! |

Having lived for many years in the city (South Philly), and the last 4 yrs in the Jersey burbs, I have noticed one thing I DON'T like about the burbs.
BECAUSE the crime is lower, cops get bored and need to invent crimes or look for nonsense "crimes" to go after ppl for. Chances are if you're in the city, and are a basically decent person, cops will leave you alone...they have bigger fish to fry (rapists, murderers, etc). Two MONTHS after we moved to the NJ burbs, a nosy old biddy neighbor who hates kids called the cops because our 5 yr old was playing outside our home with no parent present (although my two older kids were there---ages 14 and 12.) The cop who responded was Officer Power Trip....he took up our time for EIGHT hours, called DYFS (child protection of NJ) and basically made our life miserable for a whole day. Forget the fact that DYFS was blasted for letting REAL child abuse occur (the starved kids, etc)...and the DYFS woman when she came out asked me privately what was wrong with this cop that he called her over BS like this.) I told her he probably had a quota to fill and since crime is low, he had to make something up. If you're a normal, decent person, the city is better...that way cops leave you alone and go after REAL criminals. Out here, when Dunkin Donuts is closed or too busy, they have to go find something to do! Incidentally, this cop made antisemitic remarks to me while he was here that I reported to Internal Affairs...was anything ever done? Nope. His family is "big" in the Township and so.....but at least (I found out) they did kick his crackhead brother off the force a few years before for buying crack in Cherry Hill *in uniform in a marked police car, after calling in sick that day*. LOL! Last edited by MovingBackHome : 02-26-2006 at 07:25 PM. |

To Moving Back Home:
I know so many people who moved FROM so. Philly to so. Jersey (washington twp) and MOVED BACK TO SO. PHILLY!! The homes there are beautiful, but the flavor of the area leaves much to be desired when you're used to life in the big city! Hope you come back soon! |

OK...I'll bite into this thread with a first hand crime in the burbs story.
About 12:15 this afternoon I was driving to work from Drexel Hill to Center City. Sitting at a light on Marshall Rd past 69th St but before the city line I hear a "pop". Hmmm, sounded like a gunshot. Drive a few more blocks into the area where Marshall Rd dips into Cobbs Creek Park and I see a guy running down Marshall with a handgun aimed down the street, he turns onto a side street and fires a shot. I keep going on Marshall and about 100 feet later, approaching the light at Cobbs Creek Pkwy/63rd, there is a car abandoned in the right lane and a baseball bat lying in the street. I went straight on Spruce rather than waiting for traffic to make the left on Cobbs Creek. I did not feel the need to hang around to see more action! A block into Philly I called 911. Philly 911 transferred me to Delco 911 which was close to useless. Was it Public Enemy who observed 911's humorous nature? :rolling_: The 911 operator seemed more interested in learning the exact cross street despite my telling her that I didn't know. I told her that it was on Marshall in Cobbs Creek Park and the guy turned down the side street in the park. The park there is about 300 feet wide, does not leave much room for interpretation as there is only 1 side street as well. Upper Darby cops would have no problem finding that. Then she covered the phone and talked to her neighbor as he apparently had a call about the same thing. The operator I was talking to told her coworker that I didn't know where it occurred. Aaarrrggghhh. I told you exactly where it was! She also wanted to know if the bat was still in the street, I told her I didn't stick around to find out. After several minutes she said that cars had been dispatched. In the meantime a Philly cop already passed me going the other way, presumably to the scene. I also thought it was strange that she didn't ask for details about the guy with the gun, but my adreneline level was so high I didn't think to offer up the info. Bob |
