Hi! I am so glad I found this website.Hope I can get a little advice on areas to live in Philly.I am moving to Philadelphia in June to do a one year fellowship at the hospital at UPenn.I have spent a total of one day in Philly during my entire life for an interview.I am very excited to be moving there-I think it will be a lot of fun,but I know nothing about the area.Any suggestions on a good area for a family with two children, ages 12 and 8,to live that is convenient to the hospital?I don't want to be too far out in the 'burbs because I have to take call at night. And I will have to rent because as of this point we only plan on staying a year( who knows though?).Schools may be a bit of an issue for the kids too.I don't know if I'll be making enough money as a fellow to pay for private tuition. We live in New Orleans now where public schools are not an option, and I pay more for private schools than I did for my med school tuition. Thanks for any help.

but the thing I find really odd is that they're prominently mentioning the school district, for 1 Bedroom, efficiency and loft apartments. I don't know of all that many people with school age kids who are still doing the "one big room with rosenberger's crates furniture" decor. Hal |

Thanks for the advice.I will try to look in that area.Does anybody have an idea what kind of rent I would be looking at for a 3 bedroom house or apartment? I hear horror stories about the rents up in the northeast.
 Also, are there any single family homes or duplex type places in the University city area or are they pretty much all apartments? |

Most of the houses in that neighborhood are pretty big and may be fairly pricey. You might also take a look in Fairmount, across the river, which has some smaller houses, more affordable, and is not quite as expensive as Center City.

if you want a good suburban school district, lower merion is good and right across the city line from west phila. about a 25 minute drive to the city limits, then on to whatever you find--it's a somewhat pricy area, but there must be apartments/houses for rent.
