Dear all you nice people who helped me out:
I found a really nice apt this weekend in Philly, right around the corner from the Italian Market. You may recall my original posting.... (Dear anyone: Many firsts for me here. First time ever using a usergroup and first time moving to a major city. Am starting my residency at Penn and desperately need to find a place to live. Based on the little that I know about the city and based on my tastes, I would like to live in South Philly as a first choice; with University City as a second choice; and I'm open to suggestions of a neighborhood as a third choice. Can anyone tell me about living in South Philly?...is it safe? will my truck get broken into?...which "subneighborhoods" are in South Philly?...which areas to avoid?...connections to Septa?...or pros and cons? ) Well, as it turns out, I got a spacious 1br near St. Paul'sCatholic church. 3rd floor, W/D IN the apt, electric utilities not included, big closets, clean building, hardwood floors, tile kitchen floor, huge cooking space...and blah blah blah....all for $725/mo. So let's hear it.....how did I do for that price and that neighborhood? I'm quite happy with it and wanted to thank Neil and everyone else who could respond to help me out. At this point, I obviously have MILLIONS of other questions? where to get good rates from my 2002 truck, how to commute efficiently to University City, secrets about parking, etc. ? Do I dare bother you good folk for more information and insider tips or have I worn out my welcome? Hopefully not, and at any rate, glad to be your new neighbor! (geez..how hokey am I sounding right now...sorry bout that but just euphoric about finding a nice place all within 33 hours this weekend!!!....yippeee!!!) :dancehal: |

Welcome!
It's a very good idea to rent a space in a lot, if you can afford it, as the parking authority is always out issuing tickets. I know there have been a number of threads on here discussing car insurance, so the best thing to do is click the Search button above and look for 'car insurance' ... I'm sure you'll get some good leads, or at least have viable sources that you can ask. THat's a start anyway ... Welcome, again! Best, Jennifer

I would think parking would be ok in your area. You just have to remember to move your car during the cleaning days. Schedule for QV area is here might be the same for you.
http://qvna.org/Schedules/streetcleaning.htm My wife goes to drexel everyday. Walks up to market and gets the subway. It's a nice walk I do it with her on warmer days. Ok I drive her up to market if it's bitter out. There are buses to market. Driving to UC is a drag. I hate it. I suspect you'll want to drive though as you'll be working 400 hours a week probably. There is parking to be found all over UC if you don't want to pay. You'll be walking a bit. If you have parking it's a no brainer. Being in the city you don't have to worry about traffic much. South all the way up to Rittenhouse and then up to walnut is probably the easiest. Avoid Market street it's mayhem at most hours. Good luck it's a good area. Lots of food nearby.

Welcome, Dr. Bob. I'm happy to hear you found something.
I'd make a pitch for leaving the truck in the 'hood and using SEPTA (transit), especially since, as a Penn employee (I'm presuming), you qualify for Penn-subsidized monthly passes (10 percent off - a $70 pass becomes $63). That's nice because you can use them during your free time (if you have any) to tool around anywhere else in the city. Bella Vista is pretty well connected with bus lines, I guess, so you'd be able to get around. It's so much nicer doing it that way & not worrying about parking when you get to your destination. I think I mentioned it before, but I still think the best route is the 40 bus on Lombard St., which is about 4-5 blocks north of the Italian Market area. The 40 would come back on South, one block closer. Here's the schedule page & map for the 40: http://www.septa.org/schedule.cgi?ro...&return=on Click on the "show return" box at the top to show the times in the other direction. |
