Default Moving to Philly!!! Looking for some brotherly love...

hey everyone!

first off, my heart goes out to all the eagles fans out there...being a cleveland native (currently living in los angeles), i can relate to the pain of the "almost" season. we'll get 'em next year!

i'm posting here because me and a roommate will be relocating to philly at the end of february and would love to here any advice anyone could give. a little about me and my situation...

i'm a 26, college educated...musician. (an oxy moron?) as i mentioned, i grew up in cleveland, but have been living in los angeles for about 8 years now, far too long...ready for a needed change. i work at a private university (loyola marymount), but my real passion is music and that is what is bringing me to philly...my band is relocating. i had never been to philly before this past december. my roommate and i made a trip over the holidays and we both loved the city (he's from buffalo). we both really loved old city and would love to grab a loft there. but, i'd imagine that its not exactly cheap, especially if it was just named an historic district (not sure if that's accurate, but i read it somewhere). neither of us have any sort of job lined up, so any leads on that front would be greatly appreciated as well. i guess i'm looking for some genuine advice on good spots to live, preferably on the affordable side, work, etc. we really prefer not to live in the burbs, although manayunk is a cool area and seems pretty close to the city. ok, that's it for now, any thoughts, comments, suggestions are greatly appreciated.

ciao,

michael

I grew up in Los Angeles. You'll miss the sun and maybe the beautiful tan women but you won't miss the driving. Ok you'll miss the beach and the mountains and the desert as well but at least you'll be in a real city now.

Do yourself a favor and find any place in the city proper where you don't have to drive. You'll feel so liberated you'll never want to go back to LA.
Money is your only limiting factor, .

i'd say washington square west...some cheap old apt's. search thtrough the threads here and you'll find a fair amount of discussion about neighborhoods, apt's, prices, etc.

Michael,

I recommend Fishtown because of cost and lifestyle considerations. Rents are still pretty cheap, it's on the el line or there's 3 buses that run through it, and it's the up and coming artist/musician area right now. It's close to major expressways.

Manayunk is nice but the train is more expensive there and runs less frequently...and buses from there could take you all day. It's about 7 miles outside of Center City.

Old City is nice--Northern Liberties is nice, Queen Village, Bella Vista...but all of those places are going to cost you considerably more, and neither of you have jobs....

Btw, I moved from Buffalo last year to here, so if I can be of any help culturally to your friend, just private message me! Tell him to stop saying "Pop" and start saying "soda" immediately!

Don't listen to Brooke. Fishtown sucks. Pennsport is the best place to live.

they're both a bit far form the action, washington square west is the way to go.
so i just noticed the title of your post, if you are looking for brotherly love you might want to try the 200 block south camac st. in the heart of the gayborhood.
