Thumbs down The Slow Death of the Northeast

As Center Citys' circumference grows, gentrification is pushing out what they don't want into the Northeast.

We need our City Council to take-up-arms and brace for rough roads ahead!

More and more out-of-county slumlords are buying property in the Northeast to rent it out without thinking twice about who they rent it out to or ever checking up on the property. Most slumlords don't even enter the home they purchased before renting it out, they simply turn it over to HUD and the HUD inspector rarely ever gets out of the vehicle to inspect the home.

CLIP is a great Program Councilwoman Joan Krajewski has given to us, but she is on her way out and we need to think hard about who will replace her, who will fight this problem from destroying the Northeast!?!

Next we need our State Reps and our City Councilwoman to protest the Federal Governments subsidizing of these people just to tear down our neighborhoods and turn them into slumhoods. Why should I, as a taxpayer, have to pay $1,250.00 a month to a slumlord who rents the home to eight transients who then neglect the home and property?

City Council should have more power over what the Federal Government is pushing into our neighborhoods.

I have yet to see any solid legislation to stop the onslaught on the Northeast. What are our State Reps doing to fight this problem? Is everyone too focused on gambling to take notice of this quality of life issue? CLIP can't even handle it, they are already getting burned out.

If we keep feeding the problem, we encourage it to grow. The more kids you have, the more checks you get, the more kids you put on drugs, the more checks you get, the more problems you have, the more checks you get!

Why do the rest of us have to work our asses off for what we have? Why do I have to pick up the trash from across the street everyday, from the lady who has eight kids and doesn't work? Why does she drive a 00 Nissan Maxima and I drive a 94 Dodge pickup truck? Why does she have satellite tv and all her kids numerous amounts of overpriced junkfood everyday? I do nothing but pick up their wrappers when I get home from work, spending my tax money on that crap!

I'm getting really sick of the Governments social experiments. We need to take back our country before we really become a Banana Republic. States need to yield more protective powers as well. It is evident, Washington could care less, they work for international capitalists, not the people.

Well, sorry for whinning so much I just needed to get this out of my system, im sick of being quiet about the issue.

Hope I did not offend anyone.

If it goes the way South West Philly went, it wont be slow. It'll be over before you know it{about 10 years} and you'll adjust.
A once beautiful neighborhood is now a slum.

With the slow down in real estate I think you guys will be safe for awhile.
Along with the rest of the market, Gentrification should slow some.

I voted that a Rep. Mayor "can" make a difference but I don't know if one would.
After all, they are all politicians.

Thumbs down

I voted no for a Republican mayor, because there are about 805 of the city that are Democrats. i, myself, though am a independent and not affiliated with any political party.

This is a topic that was discussed ad-nauseum over the last year or two not only by NE residents, but by Councilwoman Krajewski. To date, nothing has been done to hold accountable the out-of-state landlords or to even identify them, and to bring them into compliance with City regulations.

(This goes for some local landlords too..)
When they buy a property, they list their current address as the property they just bought. So, if you have a problem with their property or tenant, and go to look up their contact info, all you get is the address of the house you are complaining about. How does that make sense?

Another issue that was discussed is that the out-of-state landlords don't get their rental licenses. A small fee to be legal.

Plus, the increasing amount of single-family homes being butchered into duplexes or triplexes. Take a look at Castor Gardens. It will never be the same again after the real estate boom they created in 2005.

Sure, a republican mayor could make a huge difference in Philly, but one will never have a chance anytime soon.
Frankly, it's a wasted vote to push the button for a republican mayoral candidate, IMO. We had a shot with Sam Katz twice. If he couldn't do it, I don't know who could.

A bit off topic but since you mentoined this, We have a method we use here.
Most of these landlords put a sign in the window with a number ,when they are trying to get a tenant.
What we do on our block is copy the number and also do a reverse lookup{unless it a cell #} on the computer for their address.
Our block captian has a complete list and believe me they get called if any crap occurs.
We also confront the landlord if He's at the house before it's rented and let him know that we'd prefer He rent to someone He'd live next too.
We apply as much pressure as is legally possible.

Just a pointer that might help anyone reading this thread.

I see your point but We do have to see who the candidates are and the kind of campaigning they do.

This City is Ripe for a change in Government and I don't care what party they Represent as long as We get rid of the "Goof's" who are in office now.
Your point is surely clear and taken.

Default Slow death

Slow you say , I wish it was slow . look around you . Ten years ago Castor Gardens was a great place to live , look at it now . It has been Ghettoized in a blink . Philadelphia needs chemotherapy NOW to stop the cancer that is killing it in leaps and bounds.
I figure in another 15 years at best Philly will be just like Camden .
A few tiny bubbles here and there of nice spots surounded by ghettoized areas.
We are praying that where we live holds on a few more years but I hear the drums rumbling at night and I know they are closing in.
Save the last bullit for your self.....

Yeah, republicans are famous for implementing controls on businesses to limit their activities that would impact absentee landlords.

I'll bet 90% of the absentee landlords are Republicans.

Typical liberal reply, spout off some crap that has no foundation and hope no one will notice that you have no idea what you are blabing about. Come up with some facts instead of just spouting hate .
What good has the democatic party done in Philly in the last 40 years besides run it into the ground? Come on lets here it , can you give one example ????? I thought not.
