What river has more potential for the growth and vibrancy to the city?
Delaware: Waterfront square condos, Penns landing, Phil. World Trade Center in the works( this weeks Philly business journal had a piece on how the developers secured a key loan in getting this project started) Liberty landing another condo project in the works. Schuylkill: Schuylkill River Park in the process of being built Post Office being sold to Univ. of Penn who intends to invest heavily along the river. Expanding the campus from west to east to eventually merge with Center city. What riverfront are you looking forward to seeing developed more? What riverfront will make the most impact on the future of Philadelphia? |

Yes, I'd have to say that if it's "potential" you're talking about the Delaware is the place, simply because it has miles and miles of waterfront that could theoretically be redeveloped. The Lower Schuylkill does as well, but the Upper Schuylkill is already set - the park, Manayunk, and so on.

I've seen a beauty on the Schuykill that I haven't seen on the Delaware: lighted bridges, Fairmount Park, the Schuykill Canal, the Art Museum, and the best view of the Philadelphia skyline looing NE. I still think that if we were able to connect the Schuykill Canal from the Art Museum down to the southern banks into Girard Point, then we would be compared to the Charles River in Boston, which is another beautiful river. As for the Delaware, they need to revamp the shipping and industrial facilities in South Phila, and Kensington and Pt Richmond, as well as create more recreational facilities there, too.

In the short term...ie the next 15 years, I think the Schuylkill probably has the most potential, simply because of the Postal Lands. Once that transformation takes place, I truly believe Center City will naturally gravity westward and the no-man's land from Spring Garden St to South on the West Side will become a great area. This will obviously take massive coordination between Penn, Drexel, Amtrak and the city however.
Additionally, the more human scale of the Schuylkill creates a quality that the Delaware will never be able to provide. In the longterm, the Delaware River will become the more ideal setting. I'm not holding my breathe for anything to happen soon. |

Did anyone see the article in today's Inq. about how much cruise travel is up at the Naval Yard? Cities I have been to where I noticed very nice cruise terminals include Vancouver and San Juan - these places should be tourist magnets and funnels for spending money on entertainment and fun. In the case of Philly, which I presume is mainly a departure point, we should focus on getting people there easily. I would love to see the Naval Yard prosper, but I'd like to see transit linkages integrated into its development, so that traffic doesn't have to snarl for the rest of us. I think the Port Authority should not throw away the idea to tunnel under the Delaware River in its considerations of new PATCO routes into Philly from S. Jersey. If the tunnel were jointly used for freight and passenger traffic, it would be even more worthwhile.
