The only interaction I've had with Philadelphia city workers so far was with some guy on the City Hall info line and the conversation I had with the 911 operator -- a puzzling experience I wrote about on my blog.

An interesting and understandably puzzling expereience Lee.
For those who have not read Lee's post, it is here: http://www.phillyblog.com/new_york_i...ly/000150.html It it very puzzling why the police would refer you to report a non-emergencyy through 911. Has anyone had any similar experiences? |

My wife and I had similar experience with our car being broken into. We Called the local police number and they TOLD us to use 911?! Back home you would be fined, since 911 calls are for life threatening situations...
Steve I feel your pain, I wonder how many people have died in this city because of this...

I gave up on trying alternate phone numbers a long time ago and now just use 911. I don't understand it either. It does make things more convienent since I don't have to bother looking up a number - maybe the city officials were taking into account resident's laziness so decided to work with it instead of fight it? This way they can staff the 911 call center to handle the call volume instead of having important calls blocked by an operator taking the time to explain to someone that they have to call such and such number. It also eliminates the arguements with residents about exactly what qualifies as an emergency.

311 would be great to have and New Yorkers seem to find it extremely useful.
I called 911 to report a hit and run on my car a few months ago and the first thing I said was, "no one is hurt and there's no need for medical assistance" after I told them I wanted to report an accident, because it's always been my impression that 911 is for "I need someone here immediately or safety is at stake." The woman on the other end seemed surprised I would mention this. I had to call back too because the cop drove past the road I was on twice. Seems consistent with kidlove's story.
