Savvy tactics help port weather storm
You can fight City Hall. It just takes some lawyers, a public-relations firm, a Web site, and an economic-development expert with a bunch of acronyms after his name.
In recent weeks, Camden's port leaders mobilized against a city redevelopment plan that they said would eventually kill their businesses. They hired an expert to draw up an alternative plan and pleaded their case on http://savetheport.com/ . They held a news conference featuring former City Attorney Morris Smith and Camden residents employed at the port.
Last week, City Council agreed to scrap the Central Waterfront plan until the Delaware River Port Authority finished its own study of the South Jersey waterfront between Salem County and Pennsauken. Some port leaders are advising the authority's process. Council President Angel Fuentes said he had become concerned about how close homes would be built to industry under the plan.
