Default Container Trees

So I’m in the process of purchasing this cool old soapstone sink:

with the intent of putting it in front of my house with two trees/shrubs. I’ve see some large trees planted in containers around Rittenhouse, some interesting evergreens trimmed in kind of topiary shapes, not silly ducks or reindeer, but just neat branchy shapes.

Anyway, anyone know specifically what type of evergreen would be appropriate for this type of thing? I’m debating between either a topiary evergreen or something more ornamental like a Japanese Maple.

Oh, it’s in front of a north facing 3 story house, so it’s mostly shaded.

Boxwoods do well in the shade or sunlight, but they take a very long time to grow. Japanese Maples don't get as tall as local varieties of maples, but will require quite a bit of root space once they take hold. I love the idea of using the old sink as a planter, it's actually giving me some ideas for my patio. I'd spend some time walking around town as soon as all the shops and restaurants have their summer plants out. You'll find quite a lot of both deciduous and evergreen trees and shrubs do quite well in planters. Home Depot also has a good selection or ornamental trees and shrubs that do well in planters.

I recently purchased a Dwarf Hinoki Cypress from HD. I put it in the ground, not a container, but it has the look you might like.
