So I tried this in the Burbs but I was surprised by the lack of response there so here goes.
Cherokee bottoms out in Pennsauken, Camden, Petty's Island Well for better or worse the largest scale redevelopment scheme on the east side of the Delaware just took a nose dive on 3 different fronts. http://www.courierpostonline.com/app...=2008803090 380 I think the developer had a lot of problems, the process was screwed, and the plan for Petty's Island was in many ways not very ecologically sound. Still this seems to be a huge setback for South Jersey after all the time and money that has been invested so far.

The citizen opposition in Camden was just too great, but both sides are to blame for that project falling apart. On one hand I understand why, but still can't believe, that big money was coming to raise their quality of life and the people of Cramer Hill said "no thanks." They won't see an opportunity like that again and politics/press made the situation worse than it needed to be. Cherokee is also at fault for not engaging citizens earlier in the process or designing a plan that incorporated more of the existing block structure (thus saving many more homes.) With better design and an open process, this really could have been a saving project for Camden.
Pennsauken is another story, and they still have a chance, barely...but they shouldn't hold their breath waiting for something "great." Also, Jeff Tittel is dangerous for New jersey cities. The Sierra Club needs to understand that to preserve the ecology on a regional scale and make Smart Growth work, you have to make some sacrifices. Last edited by CityMaps : 03-13-2008 at 09:22 AM. |
