Default NY scales back Javits Convention Center expansion plans

I just stumbled across this.

Quote:
New York Settles on Far More Modest Expansion of Javits Convention Center

By CHARLES V. BAGLI
Published: January 19, 2008
Thirteen months and $30 million after the Spitzer administration said it would conduct a 90-day review of longstanding expansion plans for the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, the state has come up with a new, far less ambitious proposal that major users of the center say is disappointing.

The latest plan, which has been the subject of rumors for months and was disclosed Friday, calls for a substantial renovation of the center, a leaky, black-glass convention hall along 11th Avenue between 34th and 38th Streets. But it proposes only a modest addition of at most 100,000 square feet of meeting and exhibition space, down from more than half a million square feet in an earlier proposal.

It does not add up to the “thoroughbred” of a convention center that Gov. Eliot Spitzer promised last spring. State officials say the scaled-down plan will let them stay within the remaining funds for the project, about $1.6 billion.

In a surprise move, the state also plans to sell an entire block owned by the Javits Center — bound by 39th and 40th Streets, between 11th and 12th Avenues — foreclosing any possibility of a possible second phase of the expansion.

Good for us?

No?

What's their max size after expansion now?

Jayfar,

Second follow up question?

Knowing that the Center for Advanced Medicine will bring cutting edge cancer curing machinery to Philadelphia..

still want to keep the ol' Convention Center?

Zur,
As was publicly asked of Senator Joe McCarthy, have you no sense of decency? Jayfar fought hard for a historic treasure. He's surely not against fighting cancer! That building could have been built elsewhere.

In the 19th Century, leaders debated encircling Independence Hall with new City Hall to make it serve the community! Fortunately, they decided to build new City Hall elswhere.

Zur's favorite seafood - red herring.

Obviously a moot point too, but yes, as the single most historic civic building constructed in 20th century Philadelphia, Convention Hall absolutely should have been adaptively reused.

It was just a question.

By Convention Hall you meant the white on right on the corner?

Not the big dilapidated ones they used to use for B-Ball games?

Really not arguing just asking.

The former Commercial Museum should have been retained as well. Convention Hall was used for basketball games, but that's trivial compared to all else that happened there, such as the keynote speech by Charles P. Howard at the 1948 Progressive Party convention that directly triggered the end of Jim Crow in the US military and government jobs. In a fiery speech, Howard, the first African-American to deliver a keynote at a national convention, challenged President Truman to sign an executive order outlawing Jim Crow. Truman quickly obliged, within a few days, in a political move to undercut the candidacy of Progressive nominee Henry Wallace. See the book "Philadelphia Presidential Conventions" by R. Craig Sautter.

With a new UPenn med school president couldn't you argue for at least a memorial/info box or a PA Historical Street Marker?

If that doesn't work I'd recommend hitting up a Daily Pennsylvanian reporter or two..they will all be "new" and love to bash Penn decisions.

I didn't know there were plans to expand the Javits Convention Center. I always thought that thing was HUGE to begin with. And a very nice space, too. I like all the light that comes through the glass and the stairs are a perfect overflow for people who are tired of walking around and want to sit a bit.

Yes, I think for the last 10 years this was planned. I have to say for as long as I've lived in NYC I've been to the javits maybe 3 times. Is not the most accommodating place to reach via public trans.
