Lets talk about building a replacement for the Spectrum out in the western suburbs. For instance Conshohocken,King of Prussia,Plymouth Meeting? Eventhough the heart and soul of the region remains center city, the people and money have been migrating away from the city for the last 50 plus years- in particular to the Northwest suburbs.
The Spectrum is old, outdated and cost prohibited and Cordish doesnt want a 45 year old building tarnishing his shiny new project. Cordish also needs to maximize profit. Hotels and Condos guarantee people who will need to eat.Bottom line The Spectrum is history. The question that needs to be asked is how do we maximize the entertainment and tax money that the Spectrum events provided. What do you guys think about Snider using that $25 M dollars that it would take to rehab the Spectrum and use it as an incentive to lure King of Prussia or Conshohocken to build a new 9,000 seat arena that could be used by the community year round. E.G. Public skating rink,HS practice rinks, concerts, along with providing new homes for the Phantoms,Kixx,Soul,Wachovia Center hand me down events etc.etc.. The Pa. suburbs run like clockwork. They grow at 5%-6% every census and with a few exceptions they are very very wealthy. There are rumors and speculation that the Phantoms will be moved to Atlantic City,Reading,Trenton. Why? Those metros are 300,00-500,000 people. Montgomery,Bucks,Delaware and Chester counties have a combined population of 2.5 million. Wouldnt the Phantoms/Kixx have a much much better chance of being economically successful right here in one of the wealthiest metroes in the country? Dont the Phantoms/ Kixx/Wings/Barrage seems like a natural fit to stay in the metro? |

And on moving it out to King of Prussia. I don't think any of the teams would approve of that, it took them alot of time to build a base in the area they are now, and to start over with no guarantee that anyone living in the KoP area would go specially without a solid transportation system to the stadium. Now the entertainment shows would work...but then again the transportation issue pops up for many who would want to go to a show. Now if it was built near the Route 100 Rail Line, then it would work out for everyone(specially SEPTA).

Philadelphia population 1,500,000. Official poverty level 25%-unofficially probably closer to 40%. NW Burb population 2,500,000. Poverty level around 5%. Would these franchises be better off in KOP with a new arena or South Philly in a 45 year old arena? Not much of a contest. The OP was correct in that the wealth and population has definitely shifted from the city.Technically Center City is the core but the heart that keeps this metro humming along is out in Montgomery/Chester/Delaware/Bucks Counties.FWIW, rail or no rail I think the Phantoms/Kixx would draw much better out in the suburbs. This is a different world, mass transportation is an option not a necessity.
