What about the zoning code’s clear prohibition of outdoor advertising in center city, neighborhood commercial corridors, residential and school areas? Is the city exempt from its own laws? It’s been established which areas will be “protected” from the street furniture advertising; it’s not good enough for parts of CenterCity. Where, then, will these ads actually go? Last of all, what will this stuff LOOK like?

At this point, I'm not feeling the "win-win" in this.
oh quit your whining...the win-win is that private business, with a much bigger stake in customer satisfaction, maintains all the bus shelters in the city, and they get to make money too!...i think they could do some of the same things with public toilets and the subway stops. anyways it just affects street furniture, and all the bus pavilions have ads in them anyway.
hasnt this already been done in other cities? put the ads on the sidewalks, and (hopefully) they'll vanish from those two-story billboard monstrosities.

Few details have been emerging from the RFP process. So, we've been talking with our counterparts in other cities about their street furniture experiences. There's a new page on our site with photos, a link to the RFP and info about an important court case in LA that could entirely undermine LA's sign control ordinance. A billboard company sued LA after their street furniture program placed ads in prohibited areas. It's still a question how our city will handle that matter here.

We'll share new info as we get it.

Can you sue Clear Channel for the NEON billboards.

Like... get into an accident and blame them...and then use their own "benefits of using lighted billboards" as the basis of the lawsuit?

If you're like me and dislike the horror ads in the SEPTA stations, this is the man responsible:
Donald R. Allman
President & CEO
Titan Worldwide
850 Third Ave
New York, NY 10022
http://www.titanoutdoor.com/Titan.html
They have an office here in Philly, but these have got to be national ads.

what are the "horror" ads? can you post one? I ride the bus but the train only occasionally.

Can anything be worse than the few pitiful ads inside the septa buses? I called septa about the "why are black babies being aborted" propaganda garbage...got a BS reply that said they had to take advertising from non-profit organizations (nonsense). I said I was from the American Nazi Party and wanted to learn more about advertising on their buses.

why can't these people sell real advertising in the fifth largest market in the US? idiots.

heres a simple arithmetic problem...

ads = money

septa needs money. therefore, septa should sell ad space.

also, if advertisers are responsible for keeping stations clean and safe, that's less money septa's spending, leaving more for things like fare modernization and capital improvements. +, if the stations aren't properly cleaned and patrolled, patrons should have the right to sue the ad companies, and septa to cancel their contracts (without owing them fees). septa's only responsibility would be to make sure that all their bus and trolley stops are clearly identified as such.

Subways in Tokyo: ads everywhere, even video screens with live action ads. Those must cost a fair amount. Probably generates lotso $$ for the system. Hell, there are ads everywhere. What is the bid deal?

so who is arguing AGAINST ads on SEPTA? I think we are all for it...just a modicum of taste needs to be exercised.

ahh...the Tokyo subways. So clean, so efficient. So often the site of vomiting by otherwise upstanding members of society...but quickly whisked away by little uniformed men armed with sawdust and brooms.

Haven't seen that, yet. But I have seen people get on in all manner of dress, from the craziest Harajuku kids' to tuxedos and formal wear. Got to love it.
