Everything was within walking distance, our school, our church, the 22nd street shopping district; even all of our relatives lived close by.. We did a lot of our grocery shopping at the mom-and-pop stores. We could walk to the movies, to the playground, just about everywhere; in fact, quite a few people (including us) didn't have cars back then because they weren't needed. My dad took the bus to and from work, the bus stop was 3 blocks from our house.
By the time we moved in 1962, we were one of the 2 or 3 white families left on our street, out of about 40 houses. I haven't been back there for many years, but the last time I saw my "house" I almost cried when I saw the condition of it because I remember how hard my parents worked to keep it up when we lived there.
I like living in Roxborough, but I miss that neighborhood a lot....sigh....

As I looked around, I could tell that at one time it had been nice. This is why we have to stay plugged into our Civic Associations, and defend our quality of life. This has everything to do with people losing a caring attitude toward their neighborhood. I'm in Roxborough as well - near Germany Hill. I LOVE the beauty of my neighborhood. The birds, the bunnies, the foxes, the deer, the raccoons - all in our back yard. You can take the ground hogs, though.
