Coming from someone that lives just a couple blocks south of South, I usually say Center City just because all of my errands, nightlife, walks etc happen within my immediate few block area or north of South just because the walkability is much nicer rather than crossing a huge four lane street like Washington with more traffic and less needs on the immediate other side.

Washington is such a dividing line that when we head south of Wash, it's by car and pretty rarely. Tonight we went to the Cantina Caballitos (which by the way we really love and it has the best margaritas in the city) so its not like we never go into the heart of South Philly but just proximity wise, we seem to always head north. I really don't think it's a snob thing as much as proximity. It also depends on what types of places you like to frequent. When you live a few blocks south of South Street, it's just easier - especially when you're walking to always be in CC rather than heading far into South Philly so you just associate yourself with CC more. Maybe some don't want to be called South Philly, but Washington just makes sense as the dividing line because it's such a big obvious street whereas South is is much smaller and unnoticeable in comparison.

By the way - Change is OK - it's OK to change the borders as cities grow. I actually find it funny how divided the city is with where South Philly begins. Coming from someone who isn't a Philly native I find the whole thing silly. Who cares? If I'm just a few blocks from the high rise buildings of CC and farther from what's in South Philly, I'm going to say that I live in CC for proximity wise only - not "neighborhood snob appeal."
