If you can get a hold of Inspired House magazine ,now out of print but back issues still available via Taunton press, that might give you some ideas. Tuanton press has a few other series, including Fine Homebuilding which might be of interest. Every year they do a kitchen and bath special issues and they tend to focus on normal houses-- ie not mcmansions.

Also look at the books that are called Not So Big House--once again good decorating ideas.
