Vikings were... well.. essentially vikings. Guns for hire (or, rather spears or arches for hire). What some of them can be credited with is establishing some elements of the statehood (the semi-legendary Rurik with his brothers Sinehus and Truwar).

The Vikings are being looked at a little differently more recently. More archaeology is turning up more about Viking culture going beyond the warriors.
