Shore Towns Deal With Coastal Flooding

With only a few exceptions, the best way to get into West Wildwood Monday was on foot.

"I think it's going to be bad," Wagner said, adding that he's "a little worried."

Mike Wagner came with a buddy from upper Bucks County to check on his West Wildwood summerhouse after hearing from a neighbor early Monday morning.

Wagner said his neighbor called at about 5 a.m. and said, "'Mike, the worst case scenario.'"

Steve Braciszewski came from Philadelphia's Port Richmond section to check on his summer house in West Wildwood, but he couldn't get anywhere near it.

"I thought I was going to make it, but it looks real bad ahead," he said. "I was surprised, I knew there was going to be rain and high winds but I didn't expect it to flood down here."

Usually at low tide in West Wildwood, the water goes down and the situation gets better. It didn't on Monday Greenberg reported, standing in water up to his ankles.

"I moved here four, five years ago. It's the worst I've seen it," Kokos said.

Winds along the Jersey Shore churned up the surf and caused what was expected to be severe beach erosion in many towns.

The story was similar further up the coast in Atlantic County, which was also pounded all day with wind gusts and driving rain.
Violent waves crashed the shoreline in Ventnor, breaching protective walls and causing minor flooding on beachfront streets.

Wind gusts also wreaked havoc on Atlantic City's boardwalk. The Trump Taj Mahal sign blew out. Parts of other attractions flew from their foundation, causing certain spots of the boardwalk to be closed for the day.

So this brings up the question...how bad is it going to be for the shore the next couple of weeks when they have no beach?
